Abstract
Considerable quantities of colorants and other auxiliary chemical compounds are lost during various dyeing processes and are released into the environment. They are hazardous to the living organism because of their persistence, they bioaccumulate greatly and eventually biomagnify at large. Here, we review different classes of dyes and various physiochemical methods for their mitigation, along with their limitations. We also review various major needs for developing biological alternatives like phytoremediation and microbial remediation for the removal of these compounds. A special emphasis has been made on dye remediation using acclimated bacteria, pure cultures, and various mixed bacterial co-cultures. The different quantitative and qualitative analytical methods for the assessment of degradation, inducible enzymes, and several toxicity assays for the same are critically explained. Thus, this chapter aims to address the recent biotechnological interventions in the area of bacterial remediation of textile pollutants particularly dyeing colorants.
