Abstract

The present study investigates the effect of adding waste glass powder (WGP) along with titanium carbide (TiC) as reinforcement on the microstructure, wettability, mechanical, and tribological behavior of AZ91D magnesium-based alloy. The addition of 3 wt.% WGP and 6 wt.% TiC resulted in a refined microstructure, with the formation of good interfacial bond and a decrease in the porosity of the alloy. The wettability of the alloy was improved with the addition of reinforcements. The mechanical properties of the modified AZ91D alloy were enhanced significantly, with an increase in the hardness (51.66% improvement), fatigue strength (59.19% improvement) and ultimate tensile strength (11.9% improvement). The wear resistance of the alloy was observed to increase with the addition of WGP and TiC, owing to the formation of a protective layer on the surface of the alloy. The results suggest that the addition of WGP and TiC can improve the overall properties of AZ91D magnesium-based alloys, making them suitable for various industrial applications. Wear results showed that the resistance against wear rate of the developed composite significantly improved after the addition of the mixture of 3% Waste glass powder + 6% TiC.
