Abstract

A comprehensive assessment of the eco-geographical and intraspecific diversity of oats helps to determine the characters, based on which it is possible to select genotypes that may be used as genetic sources for breeding. The study aims to analyse the relationship of the agronomic traits of oat genotypes from the collection of N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (VIR) with resistance to the Fusarium disease. The agronomic characters and disease resistance of 340 genotypes of hulled and naked oats of the cultivated species such Avena sativa L., A. byzantina C. Koch, A. abyssinica Hoch, and A. strigosa Schreb. from the different geographical origins were tested under field and laboratory conditions in 2007–2009 and 2014. The artificial inoculation with Fusarium sporotrichioides Sherb. was used to evaluate the oat genotypes based on grain infection and mycotoxin accumulation. An integral analysis demonstrated that an increased duration of the second half of the growth period, the presence of resistance to lodging and leaf pathogen infection, decreased plant height, and increased length of the panicle contributed to the enhancement of Fusarium damaged grains. It was established that A. strigosa and A. sativa were less susceptible to Fusarium disease than A. byzantina and A. abyssinica. Oats of naked form were more resistant to Fusarium disease than the hulled forms. The comparison of the evaluation results has demonstrated that landraces with the unilateral panicle and dark-coloured glumes were more resistant to Fusarium disease than the breeding varieties. Consideration of the geographical origin revealed a higher degree of resistance to the Fusarium disease in the hulled landraces from Russia, Belarus, United States, and China. On the basis of the complex of studied characteristics, oat genotypes with high productivity and resistance to Fusarium disease were revealed.
