Local Anesthetic Activity

General Considerations

One 1′ has to generally distinguish between conduction anesthesia, infiltration anesthesia, and surface anesthesia (Fromherz 1922; Schaumann 1938), and special pharmacological tests have been developed for each of these.

The mode of action of local anesthetics has been reviewed by Ritchie and Greengard (1966), Ritchie (1971), Borchard (1977), Steiner (1978), Butterworth and Strichartz (1990).
