Summary
A relation is presented which connects the time derivative of the recoverable strain of a linear viscoelastic fluid with the momentary values of the tensile stress and the strain rate. As on validity of the stress-optical law the tensile stress and the birefringence are aquivalent measures of the orientation this relation gives the link between shrinkage and orientation. The different time dependence of the elastic deformation compared with the stress is caused by the higher weight of the long relaxation times in the case of the recoverable strain. The elastic strains calculated by means of the relaxation spectra for constant Hencky or Cauchy strain rates, respectively, as well as for the relaxation at fixed length are compared with experimental results on polyethylene and polystyrene melts. The linear theory gives an at least approximate prediction of the shrinkage in the nonlinear flow region up to draw ratios of some hundred percent. By means of a single integral constitutive equation with strain dependent memory function it is demonstrated that the tensile stress behaves quasilinear up to relatively high strains if the Cauchy strain measure is used.
