Abstract
Daustinia montana (Moric.) Buril & A.R. Simões (Convolvulaceae) is currently classified as a highly polymorphic species with remarkable variations of leaf morphology, in terms of their sizes, shapes, margins, and indument. This foliar variability has led taxonomists to classify this taxon either as more than one species, with many varieties, or—more recently—as a single broadly polymorphic species. Previous morphometric analyses had correlated those variations to population distributions, with leaves becoming wider further south through its distribution range. We herein investigated whether leaf anatomy follows the wide variability of external morphology, or if it retains more preserved characters by performing an analysis at the populational level. This is the most complete morphoanatomical description of the species. We analyzed specimens from 16 populations, representing the full extent of the occurrence of D. montana, using light and scanning electron microscopy, and performed a cluster analysis with six bioclimatic variables. Several characters were found as variable among the population, such as smaller bundles, stomata types, as well as the presence of endodermal structures surrounding the vascular system in the mesophyll region. The population from Maraú, in Bahia State, is the most disparate one by being the only one that presents cyclocytic stomata, straight-to-curve epidermal cell, and collateral accessory bundles in the petioles. The results found suggest correlated with environmental adaptations.
