Abstract

After the ban on the use of antibiotics in aquaculture farming, efforts are being made to find out other alternative methods which can replace antibiotics and augment aquaculture production safely without compromising the quality of the yield. Some of the alternative methods devised are the use of bacteriophage and biofloc technology and also the microbiome in the form of probiotics. But there is not much information regarding the use of gut microbiome species of fish and shellfish for the development of aquaculture farming/industry. There is a lot of potential for development in this particular area, provided the knowledge pertaining to the functional aspects and the ingredient molecules that are present in these microbiome species is available. Therefore, extensive efforts are needed to develop R and D programs on the metagenomics aspects of the gut microbiome species. In order to promote the future prospects of the bio industry, there is an urgent need for intensive research to be undertaken on fish and shellfish microbiomes, particularly in the areas of genomics and metagenomics. The Functionality aspects of the gut microbiome are an important issue for future investigation and therefore, in-depth knowledge of functional metagenomics is very much essential. Metagenomics has emerged in the last decade as a promising technology that attempts to analyze the complex genomes contained within a microbial niche.
