Abstract

In this paper, we discuss interdisciplinarity and the role of quantitative and qualitative methods. We report our own experiences as we worked on interdisciplinary PhD projects. During this time, we experienced challenges due to conversations across disciplines which revealed biases and misunderstandings between researchers with different disciplinary backgrounds. However, we also experienced that such friction could open up new potentials. We discuss these challenges and potentials, limitations and advantages of interdisciplinarity and particularly qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods approaches. The overall objective is to show that combining strengths of various disciplines and their methods can advance science, lead to new insights, and open up innovative solutions. We, thereby, want to further methodological exchange across disciplines, and blur the lines between quantitative and qualitative approaches.
