Abstract

Fungi are among the most important organisms that have enormous potential for industrial biotechnology. The fungal system can not only employ in wastewater treatment, but some of important by-products with high value can be produced. Various valuable molecules such as antibiotics, immunosuppressive agents, and enzymes can be produced. Fungal enzymes have advantage of being stable with less loss of activity. Due to which fungal enzymes can be effectively used for various applications. However major limitation in using enzymes involves high cost used in downstream processing. It results increase in overall cost of the process.

Therefore, for developing commercial and economic viable processes using fungal enzymes, various biotechnological strategies can be used for bioremediation. Optimized physicochemical conditions have been optimized. These can reduce the overall cost involved.

Recent studies have demonstrated that only 15–35% of respondents employed fungal bioremediation to treat contaminated soil that has generated immense interest of using fungi in bioremediation. This chapter discusses various applications and strategies to improve the processes and can form basis for commercial production.
