Purinergic Signalling and the Nervous System

Abstract

There is substantial involvement of purinergic signalling in the physiology of the special senses and this will be considered in the eye, inner ear, nasal organs, and tongue. Purinoceptors are expressed on retinal nerves and glial cells, photoreceptors, pigment epithelium, lens and ciliary body, auditory neurons and hair cells in the cochlea, olfactory epithelium, and tongue. Developmental changes in expression and roles of purinoceptors during development and in diseases such as diabetes, glaucoma, cataract and dry eye, and tinnitus will also be considered.
