Abstract
An infection with Listeria can lead to a potentially life-threatening disease, mainly depending on the kind of subspecies, the infection route, individual immunity and the amount of pathogen. The most common human pathogenic species is Listeria monocytogenes. There are various aspects of major occupational importance, particularly for all food processing workers, agriculturists, veterinarians and livestock breeders. The most important aspects in this context concern legal foundations, outbreak management, preventive measures and regulations about dealing with contact persons. This article reviews the current knowledge about epidemiology, pathology, diagnostics, treatment and prevention.
