Summary
The problem of analytic extrapolation of the scattering amplitudes in the presence of error-affected data is studied. We show that stabilization by a theoretical normφ or by fits with suitable finite-dimensional analytic parametrizations are related in a simple way. The second method is a special case of the former withφ homogeneous of degree zero in the fitted functions. The remaining properties of the analytic extrapolation depend on further details ofφ and also on the numberN of terms necessary to get an acceptable fit to the data. The theoretical norm φ can be simply related to the stability measure used, while the dependence onN turns extrapolation into a nonlinear problem, so that one is left with numerical tests. For this purpose rational functions prove to be more suitable than conformal mapping polynomials as is demonstrated for the πN invariant amplitudes.
