Disappearance of acid mucopolysaccharides from the cell coats in mitosis-induced mouse liver

Summary

The cell coat acid mucopolysaccharide detected by the Mowry's staining was found to disappear temporarily in the liver of mice which were treated with i.p. injection of papain to induce the active mitosis. Similar phenomenon was also observed for the regenerating liver after partial hepatectomy. 3H-Glucosamine which had been incorporated into the liver cell coats was found to disappear after i.p. injection of papain (autoradiography). Acid mucopolysaccharide isolated from the liver plasma membranes was found preliminarily to be more closely related to heparitin sulfate than other reference acid mucopolysaccharides.
