Peroxisomal Biogenesis and Acquistion of Membrane Proteins

  • Chapter
Plant Peroxisomes

Abstract

In this chapter, peroxisomal biogenesis is considered in a comprehensive view that includes at least these two major components: (a) origination, i.e. the site and means by which peroxisomes (pre-peroxisomes or mature peroxisomes) proliferate in number, and (b) differentiation, i.e. the acquisition (targeting, sorting, uptake) of matrix and membrane molecules by peroxisomes (pre-peroxisomes or pre-existing peroxisomes). Morphological changes (e.g. pleomorphic enlargement) are a manifestation of the latter. Since peroxisomes do not possess their own DNA, nuclear-encoded genes mediate all aspects of these processes.
