Physiology of the Peripheral and Central Vestibular Systems

  • Chapter
Frog Neurobiology

Abstract

For many decades frogs have been used in research and teaching to demonstrate the importance of labyrinthine reflexes in the control of posture and locomotion. Because of the relatively simple access to the various labyrinthine structures in this animal, the behavioral effects of total or partial peripheral lesions were studied in great detail. The classical findings obtained by this method will be summarized in this Chapter. With the advent of microphysiological techniques several attempts have been made to study peripheral and central vestibular systems at the single unit level. It is this data that will be considered in detail in this Chapter. Although this review is not meant to describe the comparative physiology of the vestibular system, data obtained from higher vertebrates will occasionally be mentioned to provide a better basis for functional interpretations of some of the frog data.
