Peritonitis in Paediatric Continuous Peritoneal Dialysis

  • Chapter
CAPD/CCPD in Children

Abstract

Despite several technical improvements, peritonitis remains one of the major complications in paediatric, as well as in adult continuous peritoneal dialysis (CPD), i.e. continuous ambulatory (CAPD), and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD). The fact that this complication still constitutes one of the main causes of morbidity and technique failure [Edefonti 1996] highlights the need for optimal prevention and diagnosis, adequate treatment, and a balance between the goal of obtaining a high primary cure rate and the need to limit treatment side-effects. In paediatric patients, where hemodialysis (HD), for medical or psychosocial reasons, is not an equivalent option, the treatment and the prevention of peritonitis especially are key elements in the care of paediatric patients on CPD.
