Peritoneal Dialysis in Children

  • Chapter
Peritoneal Dialysis

Abstract

When this chapter was prepared for the Second Edition of Peritoneal Dialysis nearly four years ago, pediatric nephrologists were just awakening to a new era in the treatment of infants and children who suffered from chronic renal failure. The 1976 discovery of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) by Popovich and Moncrief and their associates [1], was followed by a ‘renaissance’ of interest in this most venerable of renal replacement therapies. Pediatric nephrologists were quick to recognize the potential advantages offered by CAPD to their young patients, perhaps in part because peritoneal dialysis was a familiar modality. For nearly thirty years, peritoneal dialysis has been widely considered to be the dialytic treatment of choice for acute renal failure in infants and young children, primarily because the technique is intrinsically simple, safe and easily adapted for use in patients of all ages and sizes.
