About this book

Shear thickening fluid (STF) is a smart material that has been widely used in engineering applications over the last two decades. Its smart behavior, including adaptive viscosity, has found use in many engineering fields. This book provides an introduction to STF and smart systems, presenting cutting-edge technology and offering various case studies and research. It examines how conventional structures or systems can gain smart properties with the integration of STF, such as in magnetorheological materials, energy harvesting applications, battery electrolytes, vibration-damping systems, and surface polishing operations.

Smart Systems with Shear Thickening Fluid is an essential resource for anyone working with STFs, and engineers, researchers, and scientists will gain valuable insights into its behavior and how it can be used to tailor rheology for smart applications.

About the editor

Selim Gürgen, Ph.D., is an academic and researcher in the field of material science, specializing in shear thickening fluid (STF) and its applications in defense and aerospace. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at Eskişehir Osmangazi University and is the Director of Eskişehir Vocational School. Dr. Gürgen received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Gazi University and Middle East Technical University and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Eskişehir Osmangazi University, where he conducted pioneering research on STF. Before joining academia, Dr. Gürgen worked as a manufacturing engineer in a joint venture of KMWE-Dutch Aero, the Netherlands, for three years. He has also been a visiting researcher at the University of Wollongong, Australia, and the University of Aveiro, Portugal, where he worked on projects related to smart materials and natural composites, respectively. Dr. Gürgen has collaborated with major organizations such as Fiat Automobiles, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), and the Turkish Air Force on various industrial and research projects, many of which have been funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) and the European Union (EU). Dr. Gürgen has authored and co-authored numerous publications in refereed international journals and conference proceedings and has served as an editorial board member for several international journals. He is the editor of the book Shear Thickening Fluid: Theory and Applications (Springer, 2023) and co-editor of the book Materials, Structures, and Manufacturing for Aircraft (Springer, 2022). He has made significant contributions to the field of material science through his research, particularly on STF.
