Abstract

The genus begomovirus is the prominent viral group among field crops transmitted by the (whitefly) vector, Bemisia tabaci. Begomoviruses are cosmopolitan in distribution and identified by their characteristic symptoms. Undefined symptoms are often observed in ornamental plants, and most of them are not reported. Observed symptoms of begomoviruses are distinct, and it seems like the aesthetics to them. Few ornamental plants are also available mainly around and nearby the agricultural areas. It is important to screen the viral infection among them to prevent drastic exploitation. In many cases, ornamental plants and weeds are the dominant factors for the transmission of begomovirus. Begomoviruses are diversified, and there is no restriction for their distribution among the ornamental plants. Ornamental plants have high market values and preferable all over the world. The impact of begomovirus infections among the ornamental plants dwells in the total trade and marketing to the horticulturists. The present review summarizes various reports of begomoviruses on the individual ornamental crops to give collective information of various begomoviruses infecting the ornamental plant families.
