Abstract
Nocardiosis describes an acute or chronic infection with various serotypes of aerobic saprophytic soil bacteria of the genus Nocardia. Human infections are most commonly caused by inhalation or direct inoculation of the skin. The most common serotype causing human infections is N. asteroides. Although nocardiosis typically affects people with cell-mediated immunosuppressive conditions, infections can occasionally develop in immunocompetent people as well. Early recognition and effective treatment are imperative to achieve a successful outcome. This review addresses the current knowledge about the epidemiology, pathology, diagnostics, treatment and prevention of nocardiosis, with a particular focus on occupational aspects.
