Studies of multiple allelomorphic series in the house-mouse

III. A spectrophotometric study of mouse melanin

Summary

The absorption spectra of melanins from the hair of mice of various colours and of known genotypes have been determined. They do not differ significantly. Hence the changes in coat colour seem to be due to quantitative variations in the pigment rather than to qualitative ones. This seems, moreover, to be the same pigment that is present in the hair of at least two varieties of horses. However, the possibility that scattering rather than true absorption is involved has not been entirely ruled out.
