Drug-induced “Allergic hepatitis”

Conclusion

Many drugs are suspected of inducing liver injury, but the mechanisms of this effect have been studied with only a few drugs. Moreover, for the most studied hepatotoxins, the mechanisms are still incompletely understood. In addition to its theoretical interest, determination of the mechanism of hepatotoxicity may have therapeutic consequences: recommendations or contraindications of drug utilization concerning the target population, specific monitoring for serum transaminase activities, and possibility of rechallenge. We conclude that a better understanding of the mechanisms of toxicity is necessary. In vitro and in vivo methods may be initiated to identify persons who have a biochemical or genetic basis for hypersensitivity to drugs.
