Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Division of chemical science Aims and scope

Summary

  1. 1.

The replacement of hydroxyl by chlorine in nitro diols under the action of SOCl2 in presence of pyridine probably proceeds through the slow intermediate formation of the complex SOCl2·C5H5N.

  2. 2.

A procedure developed by the application of this idea enabled us to improve the yield of the nitro dichloro compound and to reduce the reaction time substantially, as compared with methods described in the literature.

  3. 3.

The conversion of acetals of nitro diols into nitro dichloro compounds under the action of PCl5 was investigated.
