Summary
The pigment epithelium of 10 dogs was examined by electron microscope. Morphological data in the pigmented and unpigmented (=tapetal) area are described. Three important characteristics of function can be derived from the structural appearance.
-
1.
The big number of organelles in the cells, the outfit of the surface of the cells and the situation of choroidal capillaries let us assume that an extensive transport of metabolically important substances takes place. Besides we probably find important processes of synthesis essential for vision.
-
2.
Parts of receptor segments are taken up by phagocytosis and decomposed within the cells.
-
3.
Light is absorbed in the pigmented area. A process of retinal motoricity does not seem to be possible.
