Abstract

Information on the material’s behavior and properties in heritage buildings are vital to achieving appropriate preservation strategies. Identifying the physico-mechanical and durability of building stone is essential in sustainable construction. Bushehr’s heritage buildings possess valuable architecture that utilizes local Coquina which is soft and quite porous limestone. This stone is considered grainstone in the Dunham classification system for sedimentary carbonate rocks. The primary purposes of this study were to recognize the mechanical and physical behavior and chemical properties of this limestone. To achieve these aims, Coquina stone samples were collected from an active quarry; then, its petrography, chemical, physical, and mechanical properties were obtained in the laboratory. The durability of this stone was evaluated against sodium sulfate crystallization tests. The results revealed that the mentioned stone has a high porosity, low strength, and durability. Moreover, the stone must be reinforced in terms of mechanical properties before using it further as a building stone.
