Zusammenfassung

Workplace Studies beschäftigen sich mit den Feinheiten der Kooperation und Kollaboration in komplexen Organisationen, und zwar besonders mit der Art und Weise, wie Instrumente und Technologien in sozialen Handlungen und Interaktionen verwendet werden. Die Konzentration auf die praktischen Umstände der Kooperation, den Gebrauch von Dokumenten und die Bewältigung ‚normaler Probleme‘ spiegelt sich auch in den Untersuchungen wider: So haben Button and Sharrock die Entwicklung von Software untersucht, und jüngst haben sie erforscht, wie die Beteiligten in der Druckindustrie formale Modelle, wie etwa „Workflow Modelle“, anwenden, um sich ihre jeweiligen Aktivitäten einsichtig zu machen (Button/Sharrock 1994). Dieses Interesse an der Verbindung sozialer und technischer Systeme zeichnet auch die Untersuchungen über den Gebrauch von E-Mail in der Verwaltung (Bowers/Button 1995), über die Einführung elektronischer Dienstleistungssysteme in großen Bankfilialen (Randall et al. 1994) oder über den Gebrauch elektronischer Systeme in Arztpraxen aus (Greatbatch et al. 1993).
