Abstract
Microbial enzymes are of great importance for the degradation of organic material with relevance in the bioremediation of organic waste, bioenergy generation, large-scale industrial bioprocesses, and more. The current chapter deals with the most important enzymes thermophilic bacteria produce, starch-degrading enzymes, celluloses, hemicelluloses, proteases, and more. Thermophilic bacteria are ubiquitous in nature and grow on wide variety of substrates due to their secretion of extracellular enzymes. In present study, the most relevant thermophilic, anaerobic bacteria degrading various polymeric substrates are described.
