Abstract

Epithelial tumors are by far the most common neoplasms of the sinonasal tract. They originate from the surface epithelium or from the seromucous glands of the mucosa. As discussed in chapter “Epidemiology of Sinonasal Cancer,” some of these tumors are related to occupational exposures, while a role for HPV infection is emerging in other entities. Squamous cell carcinoma may also arise from sinonasal papillomas. Some recently described tumor types are also discussed: NUT carcinoma, which presents a rearrangement of the nuclear protein in testis (NUTM1) gene on chromosome 15q14; SMARCB1-deficient carcinoma, which is characterized by complete loss of SMARCB1 (INI1) expression; and HPV-related multiphenotypic sinonasal carcinoma. In agreement with the IV edition of the WHO classification of head and neck tumors, teratocarcinosarcoma is discussed with epithelial tumors.
