Stone Fruits / Steinobst

The group of stone fruits includes various fruit species such as peaches and nectarines, plums and damsons, Mirabelle plums, greengages, sweet and sour cherries, but also the elderberry and the important mango fruit. These fruit species have great economic importance worldwide. For example, 26 million tons of peaches and nectarines, 13 million tons of plums, 4.1 million tons of cherries, and 54 million tons of mangoes were harvested in 2019. The cultural requirements of these different fruit species (e.g., varieties, rootstocks, plant spacing, pruning, thinning, storage) vary widely among themselves, as well as in comparison with other fruit groups. The popularity of these types of fruit is increasing among consumers in recent years. The reasons for this are the good and refreshing taste as well as the health-promoting ingredients. The demands on fruit quality are increasing. For example, the roofing of sweet cherries is playing an increasingly important role in preventing the fruit from cracking. Among other things, climate change is leading to the appearance of new pests that require innovative control measures. The compilation of publications on fruit species of the Stone Fruits group from the journal Erwerbs-Obstbau, is intended to provide a quicker overview for all those who are specifically interested in the Stone Fruits group.
