Abstract

The recent technological development of Computed Tomography (CT) imaging technique, mainly the multidetector CT (MDCT), allows the possibility of obtaining larger volume coverage in shorter scan times, sumillimetric slice thickness with an improved longitudinal resolution along the z-axis represents, and higher contrast resolution. These capabilities are well suited for the assessment of the kidney. CT provides high spatial and contrast resolution with the possibility of obtaining multiplanar reformats and volumetric reconstructions. Unenhanced CT is principally employed in the detection of urinary stones, to detect hemorrhage and calcifications, and as the precontrast scan to quantify contrast enhancement in renal tumors. Multiphasic CT is employed in the detection and characterization of renal tumors. CT angiography represents the first-line imaging technique in the assessment of renal vasculature. CT urography has now replaced excretory urography in the assessment of the renal and extrarenal urinary tract.
