Abstract
THE physiological function of plasma, or non-specific, cholinesterase, although receiving some attention1, has not been established. This report deals with the possibility of its role as a regulator of free choline in the plasma. Several experiments were conducted in vitro to determine: (1) the inhibitory effects of free choline on the synthesis of acetylcholine and the activity of serum cholinesterase; (2) whether acetyl-S-coenzyme A (AcCoA) and choline acetylase were capable of synthesizing acetylcholine from another choline ester.
