Abstract
In this paper we analyze the influence of the number of comments and of news factors on the relevance attributed to news stories and on the selection of news story by the internet audience. This is a relevant question, because the choice of internet users to read a news story is more independent of presentation criteria than in offline media. Only the order of articles might be influential. Audience figures and statistics in the context of news articles can be a functional equivalent to the journalist's indication of relevance. Following the dynamic-transactional approach we generate assumptions, arguing that the observable size of the co-audience indicates the relevance structures of articles and can therefore be used for orientation and selection choices by the users. However, it is also possible that news factors are still more influential indicators of the relevance of a news story. We conducted a factorial survey as an experimental setting with 16 groups (N = 320 users). Our results show that news factors have a stronger impact on the attributed relevance and the selection of news stories than the amount of comments. The amount of comments, however, has some influence on the attributed relevance by internet users.
Notes
