Notes

  1. Glosses and translations are taken from Eckhoff. She uses the following glosses: DAT ‘dative’, GEN ‘genitive’, N ‘adjective derived with the suffix -ьn’, OV ‘adjective derived with the suffix -ov-’, PTC ‘particle’, SK ‘adjective derived with the suffix -ьsk-’.

  2. Apart from these types, mixed constructions can be found as well (49).

  3. Note, however, that frequency does not play a role for Saussure. Within his conception of system, relations are defined in terms of mere difference.

  4. The need for assuming a threshold and its advantages are obvious. It would have been nice, however, to learn more about the motivation for choosing 15 % as the relevant boundary.

  5. For some critical comments on exclusively bottom-up approaches cf. Zwarts (2010).
