Definition
Trona is a non-marine evaporitic mineral. It is a hydrated sodium carbonate of the monoclinic crystal system. Trona is the main source of sodium products on Earth. In association with thermonatrite and natron is one of the main minerals precipitating in soda lakes. These particular environments – filled by strong alkaline waters – have been proposed as possible analogues of ancient oceans on Earth. Together with natron, trona has been detected by spectral imagery in silica-rich opaline deposits of the Inner Basin of Columbia Hills at Gusev Crater, Mars.
