Definition

Trona is a hydrated sodium carbonate of chemical formula Na3(CO3)(HCO3)· 2H2O (monoclinic crystal system). The main source of sodium products on Earth, this mineral in association with thermonatrite (Na2CO3·H2O) and natron (Na2CO3·10H2O) is one of the main minerals precipitating in soda lakes. Together with natron, trona has been detected by spectral imagery in silica-rich opaline deposits of the Inner Basin of Columbia Hills at Gusev Crater, Mars.
