Handbook of Environmental Materials Management

Abstract

Environmental pollution is one of the serious global problems today. Many hazardous compounds in environmental samples such as heavy metals, drugs, and dye compounds phenolics, herbicides and pesticides, etc. are main sources of environmental pollution, and they may cause serious diseases in humans, animals, and plants. Thus, analysis and efficient removal of these undesired compounds from environmental samples such as wastewater and soil is a crucial task. Traditional materials such as activated carbon are commonly used for the treatment of environmental samples. However, it has some disadvantages such as regeneration problems and high cost. These challenges can be overcome by using tailor-made traps called molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). MIPs are highly cross-linked resins having selective binding groups and cavities toward the target compound.

In this chapter, we provide the recent progresses of new MIP materials for the removal of pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, metal ions, and dye compounds from environmental samples.
