Abstract

Phloretin is a dihydrochalcone found in various plant sources such as apples, strawberries, kumquat, pears, honeybush, and sweet tea. Numerous studies have revealed the pleiotropic pharmacology of phloretin, being endowed with anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, neuroprotective, and antimicrobial effects. These activities have been demonstrated in both in vitro and in vivo experimental setups. Only few clinical studies have highlighted its promising potential in alleviating skin-related disorders. Still, further research is needed to assess whether the preclinical data translate into similar findings in clinical settings. Phloretin is marketed globally as a cosmetic ingredient, with a good safety profile. Chemical features of phloretin, biosynthesis, pharmacokinetics, molecular mechanisms of activity, pharmacology in animals, toxicology, clinical trials, patents, and marketed products are summarized in this chapter.
