Aerogels made from soybean stalk with various lignocellulose aggregating states for oil spill clean-up

Abstract

A series of promising aerogels for oil clean-up were successfully produced from soybean stalks by dissolving them in LiCl/DMSO and regenerating them in antisolvents. To improve their mechanical and adsorptive properties, partial delignification and concentration regulation were performed to adjust the aggregation state of lignocellulose in the aerogels. Appropriate delignification of soybean stalk could lead to great disentanglement of lignocellulose, which was beneficial for improving the mechanical strength, thermostability and porosity of the aerogels to acquire better oil adsorption performance (31.02 g/g for chloroform and 17.39 g/g for diesel). The aerogel with a lower concentration presented slightly worse mechanical properties but better adsorption for diesel (up to 20.64 g/g). A higher lignocellulose concentration endowed aerogels with prominent mechanical strength. Its storage modulus was up to 806.93 kPa. Through the adsorption kinetics analysis of all the aerogels, it was found that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was more suitable to predict the adsorption behavior of lignocellulose aerogels in the oil.
