Mitochondrial Respiration and Energy Production Under Some Abiotic Stresses

Abstract

In plants, mitochondrial respiration supplies energy for biosynthesis, and its equilibrium with photosynthesis determines the accumulation rate of plant biomass. Though the bioenergetics of plant cells is heavily influenced by abiotic tensions, the metabolism of mitochondria under tension is still relatively unknown. This paper reviews (1) how plant mitochondria can use energy-dissipating mechanisms to control the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and (2) how mitochondria can play a key role in cell tolerance to abiotic tensions that are known to cause cellular-level oxidative stress.
