Measurement of the enthalpies of formation of ZrPt3 and HfPt3 by fluorine bomb calorimetry

Abstract

The enthalpies of formation of ZrPt3 and HfPt3 were determined by fluorine combustion calorimetry. The results (ΔHf o 298 (ZrPt3) = - 30.5 ± 2.0 kcal/g atom and ΔHf o 298 (HfPt3) = - 33.0 ±2.5 kcal/g atom) support the predictions of the Engel Brewer Correlation of metals. The unusually large heats of formation are considered to be caused by a transfer ofd electrons in a typical Lewis acid-base reaction.
