Zur Feinstruktur der sog. Membrana limitans externa der menschlichen Retina

The fine structure of the so-called outer limiting membrane in the human retina

Summary

The so-called outer limiting membrane of the retina is not a true membrane. By electron microscopy it appears as a layer of intracellular cytoplasmic densities. They should be considered as Zonulae adhaerentes. In this area the intercellular gap is 200 Å wide as opposed to a normal value of 150 Å. Zonulae adhaerentes are a special type of interceullular junction, which have a primarily mechanical function. They create a solid connection between the basal part of the inner segments of the photoreceptors and the surrounding Müller cells. In addition, they provide connections between several adjoining Müller cells.
