Summary
Unexploited diary sources show that a number of sunspot and auroral observations during the so-called “Maunder Minimum” of solar activity have escaped attention. There is good evidence that the basic solar rhythms were maintained. A reconstruction of northern hemisphere temperatures back to 1579 showed that, on a hemispheric basis, the “Maunder Minimum” was not particularly cold. The coldest decades were before (1600–1619) and particularly after (1800–1819) the “Maunder Minimum”. Spectral analysis shows that the sunspot rhythms contribute only little to the total variance.
