Summary

Complications and rate of recurrence of 85 primary pleomorphic parotid tumors during the 12 year period 1965–1977 is reviewed. In 22 cases an enucleation, in 53 a subtotal, in 10 a total parotidectomy was done. Based on the data in this study and survey of literature, it is our opinion that subtotal and total parotidectomy is best employed primarily for benign pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland. By increased facial nerve weakness and higher rate of recurrence enucleation should not be applied.
