Abstract

Epicuticular waxes of balsam fir, Abies balsamea, act as oviposition stimulants for fertilized females of the eastern spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana(Clem.). Those same waxes do not stimulate unfertilized females, nor do the latter respond to nonchemical cues such as leaf texture, shape, etc. Ablation experiments suggest that the chemoreceptors responsible for the perception of waxes are located on the proboscis.
