Summary
In dog experiments the ramus descendens of the left coronary artery was perfused with blood under constant pressure. Phasic coronary inflow was measured with an electromagnetic flowmeter. The effect of intracoronary adrenaline (A) and noradrenaline (NA) on intravascular resistance of the coronary system was studied. Under control conditions A and NA always caused coronary dilatation. But if prior to giving A or NA, coronary dilatation was first induced by low perfusion pressure, hypoxemia, dipyridamol (Persantin), adenosine, or isoproterenol, then the administration of the two catecholamines caused coronary constriction. After blockade of the adrenergic β-receptors, A and NA showed in some experiments no additional constrictive effect. If dipyridamol was added after β-blockade had been instituted, then giving A and NA resulted in coronary constriction. Thus the vasomotor action of A and NA on the coronary system depends in part on the preexisting coronary motor tone.
