Summary
In cats of various ages the growth of the nerve fibres of the corpus callosum and the appearance of myelin has been investigated by means of electron microscopy. In six stages between birth and maturity the diameters of several thousand fibres have been determined by a Zeiss particle size analyzer. It was found that:
-
1.
At birth the corpus callosum is made up of very small fibres which are tightly packed and not myelinated. The median of the diameters of these fibres lies between 0.2 and 0.3 μ.
-
2.
The median of the diameters of unmyelinated fibres remains constant from birth to maturity.
-
3.
When at an age of about 4 weeks the first myelin sheaths are formed, the median of the diameters of the ensheathed axons is 0.6–0.7 μ, i. e. nearly three times that of the unmyelinated fibres.
-
4.
The median of the diameters of myelinated axons also remains constant from birth to maturity because only a small percentage of the fibres become very large.
-
5.
In the corpus callosum, about 60% of the fibres become myelinated during postnatal development.
-
6.
In early stages of myelination as well as in the adult cat bizarre evaginations of some myelin sheaths are found. They correspond in every detail to the “redundant myelin” which has been described in the brain of Bufo by Rosenbluth (1966).
-
7.
The finding that the myelin sheath is formed when the diameter of an axon has reached a critical value of about 0.6 μ. suggests that the myelin sheath fulfills a metabolic function.
