On the properties of cyprino-pourpre A2, a pterin isolated from the skin of cyprinidae, and its relation to ichthyopterin or 7-hydroxybiopterin

  • Published:
Zeitschrift für vergleichende Physiologie Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

The physico-chemical properties of Cyprino-pourpre A2, a violet fluorescent substance of pterin type isolated from Cyprinidae skin are examined in comparison with Rana-chrome 1 (biopterin) and Cyprinopourpre A1 (isoxanthopterin). The results of the ultraviolet absorption and fluorescence spectra, pH-fluorescence curve, photolytic behavior and various chemical reactions are in accordance with the data of Ichthyopterin or 7-hydroxybiopterin. It is noted that acetaldehyde and hydrogen are liberated by irradiation.

Contribution from Biological Laboratory, Keio University No. 20.

This work was supported in part by a research grant from Keio University.

The authors express their sincere thanks to Prof. A. Albert, the Australian National University, Canberra, for his critical reading of this manuscript and generous supply of isoxanthopterin and to Prof. S. Takatsuki, Tokyo University of Education, Tokyo, for his continual interest in the work. They also wish to thank Dr. S. Nawa, National Institute of Genetics, Mishima, for kind supply of isoxanthopterin, Prof. Y. Oyagi, Tokyo University of Education, Tokyo, for his valuable suggestion regarding spectrophotometric assay, and Mr. N. SuÉ, the Japan American Mercantile Co., Ltd., for providing them an opportunity to use the Farrand spectrofluorimeter.

After submittance for publication of this manuscript, Prof. Dr. Tschesche (the University of Bonn) kindly provided us with the synthetic 7-hydroxybiopterin at our request. The Rf values of 7-hydroxybiopterin and Cyprino-pourpre A 2 were the same in the various solvents cited in the text. Details will be published elsewhere.
