Abstract

Over the past 30 years there has been an increasing appreciation of the seminal role of phytochemicals in delineating the evolutionary patterns and ecological behavior of phytophagous insects. The first chemical characterization of a plant produced kairomone regulating insect behavior was Howlett’s (1915) demonstration of eugenol methyl ether (methyl eugenol) from lemon grass oil, Cymbopogon nardus, as an extraordinary attractant and feeding stimulant for male oriental fruit fly Dacus dorsalis Hendel. It was not until 44 years later that the first insect sex pheromone, bombykol of the female silkworm moth Bombyx mori (L.) was identified chemically by Butenandt et al. (1959).
