Origins of parental care in chrysomelid beetles

  • Chapter
Novel aspects of the biology of Chrysomelidae

Part of the book series: Series Entomologica ((SENT,volume 50))

Abstract

An insect is considered’ subsocial’ if one or both parents extend care to offspring beyond the egg stage (Michener, 1969; Wilson, 1971, p. 4). Advanced parental care or subsociality has evolved repeatedly in many major arthropod groups (Eickwort, 1981; Wilson, 1971, p. 120), including at least 11 insect orders (Orthoptera, Dermaptera, Psocoptera, Embioptera, Hemiptera, Homoptera, Thysanoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Diplura and Lepidoptera; Choe, 1989).
