Localization of spermatozoa inside viviparous and oviparous females of Chrysomelinae

  • Chapter
Biology of Chrysomelidae

Part of the book series: Series Entomologica ((SENT,volume 42))

Abstract

Females of Chrysomelinae release their offspring in two different ways. The most frequent is the laying of eggs or oviparity. Less common is direct production of larvae or viviparity. Many females are using an intermediary way to reproduce: they lay eggs containing more or less developed embryos. For that reason, I have proposed to call ‘viviparous’ the females whose embryos accomplish at least a part of their development inside their mother’s body (Bontems 1981, 1985).
